Lenovo ThinkPad SL500

With the ThinkPad SL500 ($749), you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the benefits of Lenovo’s business-friendly ThinkVantage technologies. A solid performer, this system will appeal to budget-minded professionals.

In keeping with ThinkPad tradition, the SL500 comes in one color: black. Unlike most ThinkPad models, however, the SL500 sports a high-gloss lid. At 6.4 pounds, it is more than a pound heavier than Acer’s Extensa 4630Z, but it's still light enough to carry without killing your shoulder. Lifting the lid reveals a 15.4-inch wide-screen display featuring Lenovo’s VibrantView technology, which provides a crisp, clear picture without the annoying reflective properties of a glossy screen. The 1.3-megapixel Webcam and microphone array embedded in the upper bezel use Roxio Media Import to capture photos and video.

Typing on a ThinkPad is always a pleasure. The keyboard is roomy and comfortable, and the keys are evenly spaced and responsive, but we were a little disappointed that this model does not offer the tiny keyboard light found on other ThinkPad models. Still, we love having the choice of using the TrackPoint pointing stick or the touch pad for cursor control, and we appreciate that each has its own set of buttons. Accident-prone typists can rest easy knowing that the keyboard is spill-resistant; there's even a draining mechanism that directs spilled liquids away from internal components to a drain on the bottom of the chassis.

A fingerprint reader is embedded in the right side of the wrist rest, and on the left side of the keyboard deck, you'll find a blue LenovoCare button as well as three volume controls (up, down, and mute). The LenovoCare button opens up a screen where you can access many of Lenovo’s ThinkVantage services, including the Active Protection hard drive security system and System Update utility. Here you can also change system settings, perform backups, restore data, and find wireless networks, all from a single portal. The speakers, typical for a notebook, are adequate for casual listening as long as you don’t crank up the volume too high.

The SL500 has HDMI and VGA video outputs as well as four USB ports, a FireWire port, and side-mounted headphone and microphone jacks. You’ll also find an SD Card slot and an ExpressCard slot. The 160GB shock-mounted hard drive comes with Windows Vista Home Premium, all sorts of ThinkVantage diagnostic tools and utilities, and Roxio Creator Small Business Edition DVD burning software.

Despite its relatively slow 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 processor and 2GB of memory, the SL500 managed to keep pace with (and in some cases outperform) other budget notebooks configured with faster CPUs. Its Futuremark PCMark Vantage score of 2,811 was 287 points higher than the HP dv5-1140us, which came with a T5800 (2GHz) processor, but the SL500 trailed the Fujitsu LifeBook A1110 (which also came with a T5800) by 231 points. Powered by Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics and set to its native resolution, the SL500’s score of 835 on our 3DMark06 test was about average for a budget system. Battery life was also average; it lasted for 2 hours and 12 seconds on our DVD battery-rundown test. Its iTunes (5 minutes and 39 seconds) and Windows Media (8 minutes and 55 seconds) encoding times were quite slow, however.

The Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 offers a wealth of business-centric features--as well as a few nice multimedia components--at a budget-friendly price. If you’ve always wanted a ThinkPad but found them too expensive, this system is for you.
